Iyeoka

Category : SingerDocs

Boston-based Nigerian-American recording artist, award winning poet, and TED fellow Iyeoka is at the forefront of creating a new artistic genre that gracefully interweaves spoken word poetry with pop, R&B, dance, hiphop and electronic soul. She is a powerful songstress whose vocal talents invoke the spirit of soul-shakers Nina Simone, Sade, Lauryn Hill and Amy Winehouse. Her warm spirit, stirring lyrics and passionate performances leave audiences not only entertained but also transformed with empowerment. Iyeoka’s song, “The Yellow Brick Road Song” is the theme song for the USA network TV show Fairly Legal and it has also been heard in the HBO series How To Make It In America.

Iyeoka has completed recording her second album, Gold, for US-based label Underground Sun. The new 13-song collection of work was released worldwide on July 1, 2016. The album was recorded in Venice, California. Key songs include the inspirational “Thunder,” “Hurricane,” and “Akomen of Udomi,” a song dedicated to the captured girls in Nigeria. Similar to the last full length effort by the writing & producing team Iyeoka and producer/songwriter David Franz, the album captures an eclectic mix of afrobeat, pop, jazz, dance and rock. “Sinnerman” is an ode and nod to the great Nina Simone who also covers the song. “Sweet Song” features an award winning poem.

Although a resident of Boston MA, Iyeoka spends many months in Hawaii where the core of her band Rock By Funk Tribe call their home base. It was in Hawaii where the hypnotic and melodic songs “Who Would Follow” and “Gold” were created and came to life. The album also includes the single “Every Second Every Hour,” which was released in May 2015. A few of Iyeoka’s many accolades include recipient of 2010 TED Global Fellow and winner of 2009 Individual World Poetry Slam Champion. 2016 brought her back to TED to host a conference last June. Her family started and runs the Amenawon Foundation to help less fortunate people in her home country of Nigeria. This is a repeating theme in many of her poems and songs.

Iyeoka means “I want to be respected” in her native Esan language and the artist is the true embodiment of her name. Daughter of Nigerian-born parents who both hold Doctorate degrees from Boston University, Iyeoka was a practicing pharmacist before launching her career as a poet, singer, activist and educator. By channeling her culture and ancestral influences, she delivers an authentic and inspiring message of healing through her expression in the arts. Iyeoka has toured in support of artists such as Femi Kuti, Zap Mama and Soul Live, as well as played several musical festivals throughout 2014 and 2015 including Cully Jazz Festival, Colours Festival, Afro Pfingsten, and Helsinki Festival to name a few. The buzz surrounding her poetry has also garnered her national attention through performances at the TBS Trumpet Awards, the Sullivan Honors Awards at the Kennedy Center and Russell Simmon’s Def Poetry Jam on HBO.

Gary Cantlon

Category : PianoDocs

(EN:) Small crowd but big tunes. Gary Cantlon pounds the keyboard from the back of his pickup parked across from Riverfront Park in downtown Spokane, Wednesday June 15, 2022, during the annual Street Music fundraiser.  (Christopher Anderson For The Spokesman-Review) Cantlon, a retired ear, nose and throat doctor who worked in the Spokane area for more than 40 years, was one of more than 50 acts busking for donations to Second Harvest Inland Northwest during the 20th annual Street Music Week in downtown Spokane.

Cantlon taught himself piano after he retired. He said he’s always loved playing music, and used to play the bass in a band composed of fellow ear, nose and throat doctors. They went by the name “Snot Bad,” Cantlon said .

“A bunch of the doctors were musicians so we all played,” Cantlon said. “We made our staff suffer.” Cantlon played a stand-up piano in the back of his crimson Ford F-350 across the street from Riverfront Park, playing hits from artists from several eras, including the Eagles and Bruno Mars. A sign on the side of the truck read “without music and food, life would B# (be flat).”

Tony Cicoria

Tony Cicoria after being struck by a lightning had an out-of-body-experience and in this status was inspired with a lightning piano sonata. Later he took up piano lessons, wrote down the piece, played and recorded it and last-not-least played it in the Vienna Mozart House at the recital of a PianoMusicDocs master-class. ( www.pianoforte.best )
This is a very special overcoming of an essential trauma!

If you click on the youtube link below you see lots of TV-shows and interviews with him. He became president of a “near-death-experience-association”.
