Gerhard Dammann

Gerhard Wolfgang Dammann (* 11 December 1963 in Oran, Algeria; † 20 June 2020 in Münsterlingen, Switzerland;[1] resident in Basel[2]) was a Swiss psychiatrist, psychologist and psychoanalyst.

Dammann studied medicine, psychology, and sociology in Tübingen, Frankfurt am Main, Basel, and Paris, graduating with the state examination in medicine (Germany, 1990), a diploma in psychology, and a diploma in sociology. From 1986, he was a member of the Catholic equestrian student association AV Guestfalia Tübingen.

As a medical student, Gerhard Dammann explored the art of psychotics and those with psychiatric experience. During his clinical internship, he spent several months as an intern in the Prinzhorn Collection at Heidelberg University, acquiring his first works from the fields of “Outsider Art” and “Art Brut.” The collection began with a collage by Adolf Wölfli, a drawing by Louis Soutter, a painting by Johann Hauser, and a musical instrument by Gustav Mesmer. After his marriage, he and his wife Karin began collecting more and more systematically in the late 1990s.[1] From 1995 onwards, they placed the acquired works in their large Munich apartment. Initially, they acquired works by artists from the Art/Brut Center Gugging, including watercolors by Oswald Tschirtner and drawings by Franz Kamlander. From 2000 onwards, they supplemented the collection with further outsider art by Albert Louden, Sava Sekulić and Michel Nedjar. In 2003, they bought a large part of the works created in the “La Tinaia” studio, as well as historical Art Brut created in psychiatric hospitals.

In 2006, the collection comprised around 100 artistic works by self-taught artists in the fields of Naive Art and Outsider Art, and by 2014 had grown to around 300 works of “select quality.” In 2023, the collection consisted of over 1,000 exhibits. The core of the collection is a selection of Art Brut classics. These include series of works by the Gugging artists Johann Hauser, August Walla, and Oswald Tschirtner from the early 1970s, as well as works from the open studios of the “La Tinaia” psychiatric hospital in Florence. In addition, the Dammann Collection includes five of fifteen works donated from the original Prinzhorn Collection, three works by Else Blankenhorn[5], and two sheets by August Klett. There are also some unusual works: a carved bed made of solid oak, created around 1880 in an institution near Chartres, or a sheet dated 1720, which is considered the oldest known work of outsider art.

Nidecker family

The Fischerstube Brewery AG is a Swiss brewery headquartered in Basel. It produces beer under the brand name “Ueli Bier.”

In 1974, the physician Hans-Jakob Nidecker (1919–2005)[4] acquired the Fischerstube restaurant at Rheingasse 45 in Kleinbasel, which had stood vacant for several years, in order to revive the local economy. Nidecker grew up on Rebgasse, had deep roots in Kleinbasel, and was a master of the Kleinbasel Rebhaus honorary society for several years. As early as 1970, Nidecker had rendered outstanding services to Basel’s traditions when he established a foundation specifically for the purpose of saving the Basel ferries from commercialization and an uncertain future. The first tenants of the newly opened Fischerstube were the innkeepers Silvia and Mike Künzli.

His son, Niklaus Nidecker, born in 1949, is a general practitioner and practices in Erlach on Lake Biel. He is married and has two adult daughters. His hobbies are beer and sailing. He serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors at the brewery and oversees customers and employees. The wife of another brother (a musician) is the managing director.

The other son, Dr. Andreas Nidecker, is a radiologist in Basel and a member of the brewery council. His presentation can be seen at the bottom of this page.

On November 13, 1974, the first beer flowed from the tap of the Fischerstube. Nidecker chose “Ueli” as the beer’s name,[8] a figure from the tradition of the three Kleinbasel honorary societies. The brewery began small, with an annual output of just 475 hectoliters, but with three varieties.[9] Nidecker quickly realized that he needed to hire a qualified master brewer. He hired Anton Welti, a native of Emmental, who had just returned from Ghana in West Africa, where he had worked for several years as a master brewer for a large brewery. The choice proved to be a stroke of luck, and Welti contributed significantly to the company’s success. He remained loyal to Ueli-Bier as a master brewer for 34 years and during this time repeatedly developed new and original beers until he retired in 2009.[10]  In 2010, Jürgen Pinke became master brewer.

Dear colleague Ellenberger

It is a pleasure for me to send you a photo for the DoctorsHobbies.com web. It has been shot in the Wallis Alps in the area of Trento.

My environmental activities consist of two groups, the medical doctors of environmental protection and with energy politics at the medical doctors of social responsibility. We are working against atomic war.

Even if not every colleague can be active politically it seems to be important to be active in one or another form. Since our profession still receives a lot of respect and doors open more easily we can achieve something!

Besides this I play tennis, sometimes also Alp Horn (!), I am singing as bass in the Basel Vocal Ensemble and I go jogging, apart from the mountain climbing. As founder and member of the Basel “association for medical cooperation” I visit our partner hospitals in Serbia and Zambia on a yearly basis and teach there.

An actual project is to supply 70 egyptian hospitals with x-ray equipment. My special task is to assure not only the correct installation of the machines but also the correct use by the staff!

Hoping that these informations are useful I send my warmest greetings

Andreas Nidecker

Thank you, Prof. Nidecker!
This nice e-mail with information about your NON-medical activities is perfectly the spirit of DoctorsHobbies.com

Let us hope many others will think and act the same way!
Yours

Wolfgang E.

Jany Renz

During his international career as Lied accompanist and chamber musician he was partner of leading Lied singers and leading instrumentalists.

He studied conducting with Wilfried Boettcher in Basel. Master classes with Leonard Bernstein and Sergiu Celibidache completed his studies.

He was chief conductor of the symphony orchestra Dornach/Switzerland. His career began in Italy where he became first maestro and artistic vice director. Later he spent a long time in South Korea as director of the Masan Symphony Orchestra and guest conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. In Finland he got in touch with the contemporary music scene and took up several works in his repertoire. He conducted “Aida” on the Opera Festival of Savonlinna and gave master classes of Lied and chamber music. He regularly worked with finnish orchestras. He also was guest conductor of the Budapest philhamronic orchestra and of the Opera Budapest.

In 1991 a recording of the 9th symphony of Bruckner was published with the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra (ODE 764-2 www.ondine.fi ) which became the best sold version of this work in the USA in that year (and the best sold classical CD at all in August).

From 1990 to 1994 he was general music director in Freiberg/germany. As guest conductor he worked in other theaters, like in Darmstadt with “Falstaff” of Giuseppe Verdi. The success of his CD produced him invitations in the USA as in Portland, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and New York.

PRESS

(Basler Zeitung, Switzerland)

In Mozart´s last piano concerto KV 595, Jany Renz figured not only as soloist but also as conductor. In this he performed a double task which has sometimes proved too exacting for many othe rinternational celebrities. But with the swiss Jany Renz it was a sheer joy to hear and see. His sovereign virtuosity and natural zest in playing did not stand in the way of a Mozart performance marked by the lucidity and delicacy of chamber music and crowned by a slow movement that was touchingly beautiful in its humility and unworldliness.

(Portland Press Herald, USA)

With a clear and quite unassuming baton, and with a punctilious constancy of tempo, Jany Renz gave a performance of convincing unity, lending an abundance of sound and dynamics to the strictly maintained great lines while shaping them with a lot of fince nuances, in which the orchestra followed him with astonishing precision and remarkable culture of sound.

(The New York Times, USA)

Jany Renz´s creative impulse, which found compelling expression in the extreme prescicion of baton technique, afforded him ideal scope with the orchestra and Anton Bruckner´s “Seventh” received an overpowering performance.
