The Jazzkulaps

Jazzkulap is the BigBand of the UKE – Universitätsklinikum Eppendorf in Hamburg.
Under Gerhard Baumann ca. 20 musicians play – most of them medical staff of the UKE and other Docs. The programm covers Swing traditions of the 30-ies and 40-ies up to actual compositions.

Karl-Heinz Kienle

Kienle has practised long distance sports as marathon (30 kg. ago…) and has been leading on international level with diving. Besides his musical career in two Jazz bands as trombone player. And collecting severyl things – his doctors office is fully decorated with model ambulances and pace makers. He also loves to ride the tandem bike.
(DE): Sportmedizinisch kann er auf eine lange eigene Erfahrung in Ausdauersportarten zurückblicken, “Mein letzter Marathon ist leider mittlerweile dreißig Kilo her”, meint er mit einem Lächeln und einem Augenzwinkern. Besonderes Wissen hat er über alle Sportarten, die unter der Wasseroberfläche ausgeübt werden. 15 Jahre Nationalmannschaftsarzt und 7 Jahre Fachbereichsleiter Leistungs- und Wettkampfsport im Verband Deutscher Sporttaucher, mehrere Jahre Chairman der Subcomission “Sportsmedicine” des Weltverbandes CMAS, dazu Publikationen im “Handbuch der Sporttraumatologie”, in “Tauchen noch sicherer” und bei unzähligen Kongressen – das kann ihm niemand nehmen.

Whenever my profession leaves some time, I take my trumpet and play jazz. Originally educated as a cello player, I soon felt the borders of classical music too close. I needed more freedom to express myself, to play my own music, to create chorusses, arrangements and compositions and to play “dirty” notes when I wanted. So jazz has become my passion for almost 40 years. I play by myself, in a sextett !ALIVE!, in a Big Band Jazz Association Orchestra or in a piano/flugelhorn duo. Being influenced by the great Dutch flugelhorn player Ack van Rooyen I am glad to live in a deep friendship with him for many years. So the flugelhorn became more and more my favorite instrument, furthermore due to it’s smoothness and warm tone, especially when playing ballads.

Uni BigBand Homburg

The BigBand of the medical faculty was founded in 1983 by medstudents who were bored by the non-existing jazz scene in Homburg.
(German:) Die Bigband der Medizinischen Fakultät entstand 1983.
Wie eigentlich alle Studenten waren Jürgen Zimper (Trompete) und Bernd Palm (Posaune) von der Homburger Kulturszene völlig beeindruckt. Besonders die absolute Flaute im Jazzbereich begeisterte die Beiden.
Und wie jeder der nach Homburg kam und kommt, erkannten sie, dass in diesem Fall nur Eigeninitiative hilft.
Zusammen mit dem seit seiner Jugendtage ebenfalls vom Jazzvirus ergriffenen Prof. Bock (Saxofon) beschlossen sie, sich regelmäßig zu Jazz-Sessions zu treffen.
Zu einer Bigband war es damals aber noch ein weiter Weg.
Erst durch ein paar Posaunisten, die vom Jägersburger Blasorchester hinzu kamen, wurde aus dem Trio eine Combo, in der man eine Bigband im Ansatz erkennen konnte. Nach und nach wuchs die Zahl der aktiven Jazzenthusiasten, und so konnte man sich an Arrangements für größere Ensembles heranwagen.
Beim DIES ACADEMICUS 1984 stellte sich die Band erstmals der Öffentlichkeit vor.
