Margaret Chan Fung Fu-chun (Chinese: 陳馮富珍/陈冯富珍; born 1947 in Hong Kong) was Director-General of the World Health Organization from 2006 to 2017 (in May 2012 she was elected for a second term until June 30, 2017). She was the first Chinese woman to head a UN specialized agency.

Biografie

Margaret Chan completed her medical studies at the Canadian University of Western Ontario. After returning to Hong Kong, she joined the health department of the then British Crown Colony in 1978. From 1994 to 2003, she was Director of Health in the Hong Kong government. In this role, she was also responsible for combating the H5N1 avian flu (1997) and SARS in 2003, the outbreak of which claimed nearly 300 lives in Hong Kong. She was criticized by the public and parliament for her hesitant stance in combating SARS.[2] On the other hand, a commission of experts appointed by the government concluded that she could not be held responsible for the mismanagement.

That same year, she left her post to accept a position at the WHO as Director of the Department for the Protection of the Human Environment. In 2005, she became Director of the WHO Department of Communicable Disease Surveillance and Control and Deputy to the Director-General for Pandemic Influenza.

She was heavily criticized for her agreement to classify the 2009/10 swine flu, caused by the H1N1 influenza A virus, as a pandemic, as the criteria for a pandemic were lowered for that virus.[4] Members of the Council of Europe also criticized Chan, most notably the German physician and politician Wolfgang Wodarg (SPD), a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.[5] The WHO rejected the accusations of hasty action.

Choir of HKMA – Hongkong Medical Association

The HKMA Choir was founded in 1997 and held its first benefit concert with the HKMA Orchestra in December of that year. Since then, we have participated in numerous concerts, singing a wide variety of songs, including sacred music, operas, Chinese art songs, Christmas carols, Broadway musicals, and Beatles pieces. Our goal is to improve our vocal technique, refine our choral skills, and expand our repertoire. At the same time, we are committed to serving the community through various benefit concerts, bringing music to hospitals, nursing homes, and other charitable organizations.

HKMA – Hong Kong Medical Association Orchestra

The medical professionals show their concern to the public not only within but also outside their clinics and hospital wards. A group of doctors devoted to both medicine and music decide to play on stage with their strings and bows to bring joy to patients in hospitals and to raise money for those in need. 

With this sacred mission, the Hong Kong Medical Association Orchestra was born in March 1989 with the objectives of cultivating good public relations by visiting homes for the aged, centres for the disabled and orphanage, etc.; to raise funds for various charitable organizations; and to recruit talented doctors and create a forum for their mutual enjoyment. 

Since its inception, the Orchestra has actively participated in many charity and community affairs. Every year, a Charity Concert has been held and more than HK$5 million has been raised over the past 13 years for organizations including Society for the Promotion of Hospice Care, Hong Kong Anti-Cancer Society, Hong Kong AIDS Foundation, Hong Kong Society for the Deaf, HKMA Organ Donation Register Fund Ltd. the Hong Kong Workers Welfare Association, Hong Kong Donno Syndrome Association and Hong Kong Museum of Medical Science. 

Other activities most cherished by the Orchestra members are their yearly visits at Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve to various hospitals to play for the inpatients during these festive seasons. The Orchestra has also been playing at St. John’s Cathedral for the Family Christmas concert for the past four years. Furthermore, the Orchestra has given Easter Concert at the Chapel of Christ the King, St. Paul Convent.

Although most of the Orchestra members are doctors and their immediate relatives, other professionals are welcome. There are engineers, lawyers, architects, nurses, dentists, accountants and a vet playing in the Orchestra. Rehearsals are held once a week on Wednesday evenings. This promotes contact amongst doctors themselves and with members of other professions. 

The HKMA Orchestra is one of the best examples of solidarity of the medical fraternity. In the years ahead, the HKMA Orchestra will continue to perform for the meaningful purpose of charity with the pinnacle of the medical profession – a heart that cares.

36-year-old Wang Jiawan is an anesthesiologist at Chaoyang Hospital in Beijing. Aside from her daily duties, Wang is also known to some patients as being more than just a doctor. She has been playing the piano for her patients for two years, usually playing in the morning at the end of a night shift. Wang plays twice a week. She believes that music helps comfort patients.
