Dr. Martin Nweeia is the world’s leading expert on the narwhal’s tusk and tooth system. He is a National Foundation Scientist and has led over 20 High Arctic expeditions and carried 15 expedition flags to study the elusive narwhal. He holds doctorates in dentistry and surgery and is a member of the dental faculties of Harvard University and Case Western Reserve University. He also conducts research at the Canadian Museum of Nature and the Smithsonian Institution. The Smithsonian Institution has awarded him two fellowships: one in physical anthropology and one in vertebrate zoology.

His work has been featured in The New York Times, NPR’s “Pulse of the Planet,” “A Beautiful World,” “Morning Edition,” “Earth Wise,” and documentaries by National Geographic, “Découverte” (French Discovery), and the BBC, including “Natural Curiosities” with Sir David Attenborough. Dr. Nweeia has received a CINE Golden Eagle for the NGS Wild Chronicles narwhal story, the William Mills Prize for his book “Narwhal: Revealing An Arctic Legend,” and the Lowell Thomas Award for Arctic Research. His 2020 scientific publications have been published in Nature, PNAS, and two Smithsonian books.

The narwhal’s tusk—the model for the unicorn’s horn—is unique in nature, says Nweeia. “It’s the only known straight tusk and the only spirally twisted one.” In stress tests, narwhal tusks have proven to be extremely flexible and tough—a combination that’s unusual for teeth.

Nweeia examines a narwhal tusk and skull at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History before it is placed in a new exhibit, which opened in August. Photo by Stephen Voss

In male narwhals, one tusk grows to almost two and a half meters, while the other remains embedded in the jaw. Most females lack a tusk. The purpose of the tooth is still unclear. Weeia’s theory: “I think the tooth is a kind of sensor. It probably has something to do with detecting prey.” To test this, he is currently equipping whales with a sensor in their teeth.

Keith Ablow

Keith Ablow

Keith Russell Ablow (born November 23, 1961) is an American author, life coach, former television personality, and former psychiatrist. He is a former contributor for Fox News Channel and TheBlaze.

Formerly an assistant clinical professor at Tufts University School of Medicine,[2] Ablow resigned as a member of the American Psychiatric Association in 2011, in protest to the APA’s tacit support of transgender surgeries, which he considered irresponsible.[3] Ablow’s medical license was suspended in May 2019 by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine. The board concluded he posed an “immediate and serious threat to the public health, safety and welfare”, stating that he had engaged in sexual and unethical misconduct towards patients.

Ablow was born in Marblehead, Massachusetts, the son of Jewish parents Jeanette Norma and Allan Murray Ablow. Ablow attended Marblehead High School, graduating in 1979.[6] He graduated from Brown University in 1983, magna cum laude, with a Bachelor of Science degree in neurosciences. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1987[7] and completed his psychiatry residency at the Tufts-New England Medical Center. He was Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology in psychiatry in 1993 and forensic psychiatry in 1999.[8]

While a medical student, he worked as a reporter for Newsweek and a freelancer for The Washington Post and Baltimore Sun and USA Today. After his residency, Ablow served as medical director of the Tri-City Mental Health Centers and then became medical director of Heritage Health Systems and Associate Medical Director of Boston Regional Medical Center.

Ablow has written columns for publications including The New York TimesThe Washington PostU.S. News & World ReportUSA TodayNewsweekThe Baltimore SunThe Boston Herald and FoxNews.com. Wolfgang,

I enjoyed viewing the hobbies listed on your website.  Most are more high-minded than mine.  In recent years I have resumed an old hobby from my mispent youth that might be properly characterized as “grease monkey-doc.”  I restore old Porsche 911s in my spare time (attached photos) and find it to be very relaxing working with my hands.

With Regards,

Tom

Iyeoka

Category : SingerDocs

Boston-based Nigerian-American recording artist, award winning poet, and TED fellow Iyeoka is at the forefront of creating a new artistic genre that gracefully interweaves spoken word poetry with pop, R&B, dance, hiphop and electronic soul. She is a powerful songstress whose vocal talents invoke the spirit of soul-shakers Nina Simone, Sade, Lauryn Hill and Amy Winehouse. Her warm spirit, stirring lyrics and passionate performances leave audiences not only entertained but also transformed with empowerment. Iyeoka’s song, “The Yellow Brick Road Song” is the theme song for the USA network TV show Fairly Legal and it has also been heard in the HBO series How To Make It In America.

Iyeoka has completed recording her second album, Gold, for US-based label Underground Sun. The new 13-song collection of work was released worldwide on July 1, 2016. The album was recorded in Venice, California. Key songs include the inspirational “Thunder,” “Hurricane,” and “Akomen of Udomi,” a song dedicated to the captured girls in Nigeria. Similar to the last full length effort by the writing & producing team Iyeoka and producer/songwriter David Franz, the album captures an eclectic mix of afrobeat, pop, jazz, dance and rock. “Sinnerman” is an ode and nod to the great Nina Simone who also covers the song. “Sweet Song” features an award winning poem.

Although a resident of Boston MA, Iyeoka spends many months in Hawaii where the core of her band Rock By Funk Tribe call their home base. It was in Hawaii where the hypnotic and melodic songs “Who Would Follow” and “Gold” were created and came to life. The album also includes the single “Every Second Every Hour,” which was released in May 2015. A few of Iyeoka’s many accolades include recipient of 2010 TED Global Fellow and winner of 2009 Individual World Poetry Slam Champion. 2016 brought her back to TED to host a conference last June. Her family started and runs the Amenawon Foundation to help less fortunate people in her home country of Nigeria. This is a repeating theme in many of her poems and songs.

Iyeoka means “I want to be respected” in her native Esan language and the artist is the true embodiment of her name. Daughter of Nigerian-born parents who both hold Doctorate degrees from Boston University, Iyeoka was a practicing pharmacist before launching her career as a poet, singer, activist and educator. By channeling her culture and ancestral influences, she delivers an authentic and inspiring message of healing through her expression in the arts. Iyeoka has toured in support of artists such as Femi Kuti, Zap Mama and Soul Live, as well as played several musical festivals throughout 2014 and 2015 including Cully Jazz Festival, Colours Festival, Afro Pfingsten, and Helsinki Festival to name a few. The buzz surrounding her poetry has also garnered her national attention through performances at the TBS Trumpet Awards, the Sullivan Honors Awards at the Kennedy Center and Russell Simmon’s Def Poetry Jam on HBO.
