A collaborative student-run effort to support medical students and professionals in musical pursuits and to further the understanding of music in medicine.
Music as Medicine
Through Weill Cornell’s affiliation with New York Presbyterian Hospital, the students and faculty of the Music and Medicine Initiative are developing partnerships to integrate music into medical practice.
Music in the Community
Bringing music to the Weill Cornell and New York City community is a vital part of our mission. We have organized benefit concerts for GHESKIO, Kokoro no Care, and the Weill Cornell Community Clinic, in addition to performing at institute events.
Lectures and Seminars
Informational events allow students and members of our academic community to explore the relationship between music and medicine. Recent topics have included historical perspectives on music and medicine, music therapy for inpatient care, and the science of musical phenomena.
The Art of Collaboration
In addition to working with medical departments at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical College, the Music and Medicine Initiative has built relationships with some of the world’s foremost musical institutions, which provide our students with unique opportunities for mentorship, partnership, and growth. In return, we provide specialized medical care to their musicians and organize seminars on performing arts medicine targeted towards musicians. Students and faculty of The Juilliard School have partnered with WCMC to shape the Music and Medicine Initiative. Juilliard faculty members volunteer as coaches, and students at the two schools often collaborate to organize and perform at events
The 54-member Rochester Medical Orchestra was founded by Dr. Stephen Lurie in 2007 as a vehicle for musically-inclined physicians, scientists and medical staff, residents and students to come together to play music

AN ORCHESTRA OF MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS IN PHILADELPHIA
The PMSO comprises musicians from across the Philadelphia area who work in healthcare, including but not limited to physicians, nurses, researchers, students, dentists, veterinarians, and administrators.
Since 2004, the Queensland Medical Orchestra and Choir have provided an opportunity for medical professionals, students and friends a chance to share their musical talents with the greater community. Outside of rehearsals, our members range from Directors of major hospital departments to first year medical students; from senior Allied Health specialists to those who work outside of medicine (we affectionately refer to them as “Patients”). However inside rehearsals and on the stage, we all work side by side to get through that tricky semiquaver run or nail those high notes.
With repertoire ranging from the symphonic blockbusters to Broadway showtunes, we perform three concerts a year that aim to please all musical tastes to raise money for the Ashintosh Foundation and numerous other charities. We don’t shy away from tackling major works that before QMO we could only fantasise about playing. Some such highlights include Carmina Burana, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Saint-Saens Organ Symphonie and the 1812 Overture.
The Northwestern Medical Orchestra was formed in the Spring of 2018 by first-year medical students to provide an instrumental musical experience for members of the Northwestern medical community in downtown Chicago. The orchestra’s first season culminated in a two-concert series including works by Dvorak, Beethoven, Ravel, and John Williams. NMO hopes to share its music with students, physicians, staff, and patients alike.
The Nebraska Medical Orchestra–a collaboration between UNO and UNMC–is a volunteer orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Matthew Brooks, open to all healthcare-related musicians. While many of our musicians come from various colleges and departments at UNMC, Nebraska Medicine, and Children’s Hospital & Medical Center, we have welcomed musicians affiliated with other healthcare organizations and institutions, including UNL, Clarkson College, Nebraska Methodist College, Creighton University, and private practices.
