LAMMPS Big Band is a swing/jazz band made up of medical students from the University of Leeds. We play a wide repertoire of music including funk, jazz, swing and big band twists on modern classics. We are also available for function performances.
The Leeds University Union Big Band (formerly known as the Leeds University Union Dance Band) was formed in 1987 as part of the Leeds University Union Music Society (LUUMS). In the 25 years since its formation it has moved from its humble beginnings to an independent, semi-professional band gigging around Leeds, the wider Yorkshire area and further afield.
This 22 piece Big Band auditions for members at the beginning of the academic year every September and plucks the best jazz players from the University to play with us for the forthcoming year. The band rehearses every Tuesday evening in the University Union.
LUUBB has flourished since it began and now performs at private functions and publicly organised gigs in some of Leeds’ most prestigious jazz venues including The Wardrobe and HiFi. The band is available to hire for balls, parties and weddings so do not hesitate to get in contact!
In 2009, the band saw off some fierce competition at the Great North Big Band Competition, by winning the best overall band and the best soloist (George Millard, 1st Tenor). LUUBB has supported acts such as Ellie Goulding and Florence and the Machine, and in 2012 performed at the renowned North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam.
Each year at Easter time, the band goes on tour to Villereal near Bergerac in the South of France. Whilst on tour, we perform at a variety of events and venues ranging from charity concerts to Pizzerias.
